At the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), emergency announcements are delivered with all the fire and passion of a reluctant uncle giving a birthday toast. Typhoon warnings, volcanic eruptions, and economic crises are all introduced with phrases like, “In these trying yet inspiring times, we find ourselves reflecting on the beauty of community resilience…”
Disaster communication expert Mylene Garcia remarks, “The PIA could announce a zombie outbreak and youd still think it was a Rotary Club induction.”
Citizens react with mixed emotions. “By the time I figure out if Im supposed to evacuate, Ive already learned three unrelated proverbs,” complained resident Dennis Uy.
