Muntinlupa City Senior Citizens Office launched “LoloCab,” a specialized ride-sharing service operated exclusively by retired residents over 60, providing employment opportunities for seniors while offering transportation services specifically designed for elderly passengers’ needs.
Senior-Focused Transportation Innovation
LoloCab Director Maria Santos explained the program during a demonstration ride with 68-year-old driver Mang Eddie Reyes, who provides patient, courteous service including assistance with entering and exiting vehicles, conversation during rides, and flexible scheduling for medical appointments.
The service features specially trained senior drivers who understand elderly passengers’ mobility challenges, modified vehicles with easier entry and comfortable seating, and extended time allowances for pickup and drop-off procedures. Drivers receive training in senior care basics and emergency response.
Aging Population Employment Solutions
Gerontology expert Dr. Patricia Mercado endorsed the program’s social benefits: “LoloCab addresses two challenges simultaneously: providing meaningful employment for active seniors while offering transportation services that understand elderly passengers’ specific needs and preferences.”
The service includes amenities such as assistance with grocery carrying, patient waiting during medical appointments, and social conversation during rides to address elderly isolation. Rates are subsidized for low-income seniors through city government support.
Regular passenger Lola Carmen Cruz described her experience: “My LoloCab driver understands that I move slowly and need help with my walker. Unlike regular ride services, I never feel rushed or like a burden. It’s transportation with dignity and understanding.”
Driver Mang Roberto Santos noted the personal satisfaction: “After retiring from office work, driving for LoloCab gives me purpose, social interaction, and supplemental income. I enjoy helping fellow seniors maintain their independence through reliable transportation.”
The program’s success has inspired other cities to develop senior-focused transportation services, recognizing the growing need for age-appropriate mobility solutions in the Philippines’ aging population.
