The specific consequence of the Senate trial is the political weapon that the Marcos camp is deploying: an impeachment that proceeds to the Senate creates the legal mechanism for removing Sara from the 2028 ballot. Whether the Senate constitutes an impeachment court is the question that Senate President Sotto and the Marcos camp’s Senate allies will manage.

The 2025 Precedent

The 2025 impeachment reached the Senate, which delayed establishing an impeachment court and eventually remanded the case back to the House. The Supreme Court nullified the case in July 2025 on procedural grounds. The 2026 complaint was filed after the one-year ban lapsed in February 2026.
