Paranaque City Beach Receives International Blue Flag Certification Through Creative Interpretation
Parañaque City Beach achieved international recognition by becoming the first urban metropolitan beach to receive Blue Flag environmental certification, after successfully arguing that traditional cleanliness standards don’t apply to “authentic Manila Bay coastal experiences.”
Innovative Environmental Standards
Beach Manager Engineer Rosa Santos celebrated the certification during a ceremony where she demonstrated the beach’s unique “metropolitan marine ecosystem,” explaining that brown water indicates “rich mineral content” rather than pollution, and that the distinctive aroma represents “authentic urban coastal ambiance.”
The Blue Flag committee accepted Parañaque’s argument that their beach offers a different category of coastal experience specifically “urban industrial waterfront recreation” which requires different evaluation criteria than traditional tropical beaches.
Redefining Beach Tourism
Environmental consultant Dr. Patricia Mercado defended the certification: “Parañaque Beach offers visitors an authentic Manila Bay experience that can’t be replicated at sanitized resort beaches. The water’s unique composition tells the story of Metro Manila’s industrial development.”
Beach amenities supporting the certification include educational signage explaining the historical significance of Manila Bay’s changing water composition, guided tours of the “Urban Coastal Ecosystem,” and professional photography services specializing in “atmospheric maritime sunset photography.”
Tourist Maria Cruz praised the authentic experience: “Unlike artificial resort beaches, Parañaque Beach offers genuine Manila Bay swimming. You really feel connected to the city’s maritime heritage, and the sunsets are spectacular when there’s enough atmospheric particulates for proper light diffusion.”
International tourism boards are studying Parañaque’s model as a potential template for marketing other urban industrial coastal areas as authentic metropolitan beach experiences rather than trying to compete with traditional tropical destinations.
