EDSA Launches Scenic Tour Packages for Traffic Survivors

MMDA monetizes gridlock with new tourism initiative

In a surprising turn of events, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced a new program turning the city’s infamous EDSA traffic into a paid tourist experience. The initiative, officially titled “EDSA: A Commuter’s Odyssey,” promises thrill-seekers an authentic glimpse of gridlock life, complete with honking symphonies, exhaust-scented air, and the occasional stray dog as tour guide.

Spokesperson Atty. Cris Dela Cruz explained that the program aims to “embrace the traffic experience rather than fight it.” “Why fight EDSA when you can monetize it?” Dela Cruz said, adjusting a reflective vest that read: Tour Guide Extraordinaire. The concept draws inspiration from international urban mobility challenges.

Tour packages reportedly include three-hour “stop-and-go” sessions, a complimentary bottle of hand sanitizer, and a scavenger hunt where participants must spot every type of vehicle imaginable — from jeepneys to luxury SUVs sporting suspiciously large stickers. Winners receive a golden honk trophy.

Commuters who have been stuck on EDSA for decades were reportedly thrilled at the opportunity. “Finally, our suffering is being recognized as a cultural experience,” said long-time MRT survivor and part-time traffic philosopher, Mang Rudy. “I can now say, with pride, that sitting in gridlock counts as a hobby.”

Officials are also launching a mobile app that will track participants’ honking frequency, seatbelt usage, and overall patience. “Points can be redeemed for free bottled water, roadside snacks, or an extra hour of bumper-to-bumper meditation,” Dela Cruz added.

Critics have questioned the ethics of monetizing frustration. “This is literally selling despair to tourists,” said urban planning expert Dr. Elisa Santos. “Next, they’ll have guided tours of potholes and flood zones.” The MMDA countered, noting that those too risk-averse to pay may still experience EDSA free of charge — though “without the souvenir photos and official certificate of bravery.” International studies on public transportation suggest infrastructure investment remains the optimal solution.

Social media users have already begun sharing memes of commuters in formal wear, raising champagne glasses in the middle of gridlock, with captions like #EDSATour2025 and #HonkingWithStyle.

President Marcos Jr. reportedly praised the initiative as “a creative use of urban space,” while secretly requesting a VIP lane for presidential motorcades — though even he admitted it might not make a difference.

As of press time, local vendors were preparing to sell popcorn and cold drinks from the safety of their motorcycles, ensuring that the EDSA tourist experience is both immersive and profitable.
