Dutertes Suffer Their Worst Wednesday Since Last Wednesday

ICC Appeal Rejected, AMLC Flags Billions, Astrology App Takes Credit

MANILA —

In what congressional critics are calling the “worst day in recent Duterte memory,” former president Rodrigo Duterte saw his jurisdictional challenge at the International Criminal Court rejected the same Wednesday that his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, learned the Anti-Money Laundering Council had flagged P6.8 billion in bank transactions linked to her and her husband.

A rival from the Makabayan bloc described the events as a “double whammy,” a phrase that was quickly picked up by international wire services, Philippine political meme accounts, and the Dutertes’ own publicist, who was reportedly shopping for a trademark.

The Astrology Defense

Within hours, a popular Metro Manila astrology app had taken public credit for the ruling, claiming it had predicted “high-stakes legal turbulence” for anyone with the birthdate pattern of Rodrigo Duterte. A competing app countered that its forecast had specifically warned against “media days involving transactions over seven figures.” Both apps reportedly saw a 400 percent spike in downloads.

“Wednesday is historically a rough day for populist political dynasties,” explained a communications consultant who asked not to be named because he was trying to stay employable. “Tuesday they deflect. Thursday they counter-file. But Wednesday, man. Wednesday is when the headlines run.”

The AMLC Numbers

Writers at Bohiney Magazine have pointed out that P6.8 billion, when divided by the 19 years covered in the AMLC report, works out to roughly P979,000 per day, which the Vice President’s office has called “an ordinary family budget for someone with significant dry cleaning needs.”

Vice President Duterte’s spokesperson issued a statement describing the transactions as “routine,” noting that every household “sometimes moves billions around.” The Bureau of Internal Revenue briefly updated its website in response, then took the update down, then put it back up, then called in sick.

At the International Criminal Court, meanwhile, the rejection of the elder Duterte’s jurisdictional appeal clears the way for a pre-trial chamber decision on the confirmation of charges tied to his administration’s drug war. Legal observers at The London Prat noted that jurisdictional challenges are typically used to delay trials, not stop them, and that anyone who thought otherwise was “extremely optimistic for someone facing the ICC.”

Former senator Leila de Lima, an endorser of one of the two active impeachment complaints, observed that “impunity is becoming a thing of the past.” Analysts suggested she may be speaking slightly ahead of the evidence, but in the right general direction.

At press time, the Duterte camp had announced that Wednesdays would henceforth be re-branded “Strategic Wellness Days” during which no public statements would be made. For similar coverage of political timing disasters, see The Poke.
