Decades Of Futile Searching Culminate In Spiritual Transcendence Of The Need To Park
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — A Metro Manila resident has reportedly achieved a state of profound inner peace and spiritual enlightenment after decades of searching for parking, finally transcending the very desire to park by accepting, completely and without resistance, that he will never, ever find a parking space anywhere in the metro.
“I am free,” announced Manila resident Rodel Tanchanco, 49, who has not successfully parked in seven years. “For decades, I suffered. I searched for parking, circled blocks, fought for spaces, raged at the impossibility of it. And then, one day, I let go. I accepted that there is no parking. There has never been parking. There will never be parking. And in that acceptance, I found peace. I no longer search. I no longer hope. I have transcended the need to park. I simply drive, eternally, at peace, knowing I will never stop, and that this is the way of things.”
The Path To Enlightenment
According to the Institute for Urban Spirituality, Tanchanco has achieved what few city dwellers ever attain. “The search for parking in Metro Manila is a source of immense suffering,” explained Dr. Esperanza Lim. “Most residents struggle against it their whole lives, circling, hoping, fighting, raging. Mr. Tanchanco has done something remarkable. He has stopped struggling. He has accepted the fundamental truth that there is no parking, and in that acceptance, he has been liberated from the suffering that the search produces. He has reached a state of parking enlightenment, a serene acceptance of the eternal carlessness of the Metro Manila motorist. It is a profound spiritual achievement.”
Tanchanco described the moment of his awakening. “I was circling a mall for the third hour,” he recalled. “Searching, as I always searched. And suddenly I understood. The search is the suffering. The hope is the pain. There is no parking, and there never will be, and fighting this truth was destroying me. So I surrendered. I stopped looking. I accepted. And immediately, the suffering lifted. I was at peace. I drove away, parking nowhere, needing nothing, free. I have not stopped driving since. I have transcended the need to arrive, to park, to stop. I simply move through the city, eternally, in perfect peace.”
The Liberated Motorist
Tanchanco’s family reports that his transformation, while spiritually impressive, has created practical complications. “He never comes home,” said his wife, Marites, 46. “Because coming home would require parking, and he has transcended parking. So he just drives. Forever. At peace, he says. Free. But also never actually arriving anywhere. We bring him food at red lights. He is very serene. Very enlightened. But he is also perpetually in motion, unable to stop, because stopping requires the parking he has spiritually surrendered. I am happy he found peace. I would also like him to come inside sometimes. But he has transcended the inside. He lives in the car now, at peace, driving.”
Experts noted that Tanchanco’s enlightenment, while genuine, had perhaps overcorrected. “He has solved the suffering of the parking search,” said Dr. Lim. “By eliminating the goal of parking entirely. This is effective. He no longer suffers. But it has left him in perpetual motion, unable to stop, because stopping is the thing he transcended. He has traded the suffering of seeking parking for the condition of never being able to park, which he experiences as freedom but which also means he can never get out of his car. It is enlightenment of a sort. It is also a man who lives in traffic now, permanently, at peace, going nowhere, forever.”
The Disciples
Tanchanco’s serenity has begun to attract followers among the parking-tormented motorists of Metro Manila. “People see how peaceful he is,” said Marites. “Other drivers, stuck in the same hopeless search, see this serene man who has stopped searching, and they want what he has. He has disciples now. Motorists who have also surrendered, who also drive eternally, at peace, never parking. There is a whole group of them now, circling the city, enlightened, carless in spirit if not in fact, having transcended the need to ever stop. They wave to each other as they pass, the parking-enlightened, serene in their endless motion.”
Experts expressed measured concern about the growing movement. “The parking-enlightenment philosophy is spreading,” said Dr. Lim. “And while it does relieve suffering, it also produces a growing population of motorists who never park, never stop, never arrive, simply driving eternally in serene acceptance. If too many citizens achieve this enlightenment, the roads will fill with peaceful drivers going nowhere, having transcended destinations entirely. The traffic, already a permanent geographic feature, would become a kind of rolling monastery, full of enlightened motorists who have accepted that there is no parking and therefore no reason to ever stop. It is peaceful. It is also, potentially, gridlock as a way of life.”
The Eternal Drive
Tanchanco continues his serene, endless journey through Metro Manila, at peace, parking nowhere, having transcended the need to ever arrive. “I am free,” he said, at a stoplight, before driving on to nowhere in particular, as he would for the rest of the day, and possibly his life. “The search for parking was a prison. I escaped it by accepting there is no parking. Now I simply drive, at peace, needing nothing, arriving nowhere, free of the suffering that torments every motorist who still hopes to park. They are trapped in hope. I am liberated by acceptance. There is no parking. There never was. And in that truth, I have found my peace.” He drove on, serene and carless in spirit, an enlightened motorist circling the eternal city, having achieved the only victory available to the Metro Manila driver: the peace that comes from giving up entirely.
