Manila Jeepney Drivers Announce Solidarity Strike With British Mortgage Holders

Federation Cites the Underlying Architecture as Identical, Confirms Drivers Will Honk in Coordinated Patterns Until British Tracker Rates Decline

MANILA — The Manila Jeepney Drivers Federation announced a one-day solidarity strike Wednesday in support of British tracker-mortgage holders affected by the recent UK base-rate increase, in what the federation president described as the first transcontinental jeepney action in our institutional history.

The Solidarity Argument

Federation president Mario Bayani, 56, told the Philippine Star that the underlying architecture connecting Manila daily fuel costs to British borrowing costs was identified by our research committee as functionally identical. Both groups, Bayani argued, are paying additional monthly costs to address an inflation problem that the Bank of England recent rate rise has confirmed is principally driven by food and fuel prices that the rate rise will not, in any direct sense, address.

The Coordinated Honking

The strike will, on the federation plan, take the form of approximately 18,000 jeepneys honking in synchronized 30-second patterns at 8:00 a.m. Manila time, which is 1:00 a.m. London time, ensuring that Andrew Bailey will, on every available indicator, not hear it. The federation acknowledged this but insisted the gesture remained meaningful.

Riders, asked their views on the action, generally supported it but noted they would also need to get to work and would, on the available evidence, find another route. The cooling of demand for jeepney services was, federation members noted, not the cooling we asked for.
