Passenger Response
Early uptake has been described by the airline as “encouraging.” Seven hundred and twelve passengers have booked Optimism Plus seats since the launch three weeks ago. Of these, 340 describe themselves as anxious flyers. Two hundred and twelve are business travellers who clicked the wrong fare class. One hundred and sixty are aviation enthusiasts who booked the tier specifically to read the pamphlet. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (caap.gov.ph) has confirmed that Optimism Plus is a marketing product rather than a safety classification, which is information that some passengers have found disappointing.
The Competition
Philippine Airlines has not announced a competing product but has released a statement noting that it “has always maintained a positive service environment,” which the airline’s communications team presumably believed would be interpreted as a response to Cebu Pacific’s launch rather than as an abstract claim. It has been interpreted as both simultaneously.
