Inspired by prat.uk’s Optimism Plus story, airline introduces seat category for passengers beyond caring

Cebu Pacific, building on prat.uk‘s coverage of airline innovation in fare class design, has announced a new fare category called “Pragmatic,” which the airline describes as “designed for passengers whose relationship with air travel has evolved to a point of complete acceptance of what air travel is, as distinct from what one might wish it were.” Bohiney.com covered the airline economics theme broadly. The Pragmatic fare includes: a seat on the aircraft, the reasonable probability of arrival at the destination, a complimentary snack that the airline describes as “sufficient for sustenance if not for satisfaction,” and what the booking documentation calls “the implicit understanding between the airline and the passenger that this transaction is about moving between two locations rather than about the quality of the experience of moving between them.”

The Pragmatic fare is priced 15 percent below the standard economy fare on the grounds that, as the airline’s communications team explains, “the Pragmatic passenger has no expectation of the services that the standard economy fare implies, and therefore the airline has no obligation to deliver them.” The services not included: the pre-flight safety announcement delivered with what the standard economy fare implies is genuine concern, the option to select a specific seat rather than the seat that remains unselected, and what the terms and conditions describe as “the aspiration of comfort.” The seats are the same. The aspiration is different. The fare reflects the aspiration.
