Las Piñas City Development Office transformed urban blight into entertainment opportunities by converting 15 abandoned lots into drive-in movie theaters, creating the Philippines’ largest automotive cinema network while addressing vacant property issues.

Urban Renewal Through Entertainment

Entertainment Development Director Maria Santos unveiled the program during the premiere screening of “Fast and Furious” at the newly opened “Lot 7 Drive-In Cinema,” where families watched movies from their cars while enjoying street food delivered directly to vehicle windows.

The drive-in network features different themes for each location, including “Classic Filipino Cinema Drive-In” showing restored local films, “International Blockbuster Drive-In” for Hollywood releases, and “Family-Friendly Animation Drive-In” specializing in children’s programming. Each venue includes modern digital projection, FM radio sound transmission, and mobile food service.

Nostalgic Entertainment Revival

Urban entertainment expert Dr. Patricia Reyes noted the cultural significance: “Las Piñas is reviving drive-in cinema culture while solving contemporary urban problems. Families get safe entertainment experiences while vacant lots become productive community assets.”

The drive-in experience includes pre-movie entertainment such as classic car shows, food truck festivals, and live musical performances. Some venues offer “VIP parking” with premium viewing angles and exclusive food service for special occasions.

Regular customer Roberto Cruz described the family experience: “Taking my kids to drive-in movies creates this nostalgic connection to entertainment from my childhood, but with modern conveniences like digital sound and gourmet food trucks. It’s simultaneously retro and contemporary.”

The program’s success has attracted attention from property developers and entertainment companies, with plans to expand the drive-in network to other Metro Manila cities with available vacant lots.

Economic impact studies show the drive-in theaters generate significant local revenue while transforming previously problematic abandoned properties into community entertainment destinations that families visit regularly.
