Fitness center unveils machines that physically retreat from users to encourage faster running
Latest Innovation
A Manila fitness center unveiled its latest innovation: treadmills that physically move away from users to encourage them to run faster. Gym owner Carlo explained the inspiration: “People slow down too easily. But if the treadmill runs from you, you have no choice but to chase your goals. Literally.”
How It Works
The machines are mounted on wheels and programmed to retreat from the user at varying speeds. Trainers warn participants to stay alert, as the treadmill may suddenly accelerate, swerve, or attempt to flee the building entirely. During the launch, one treadmill escaped into the street, pursued by three gym members, two trainers, and a very confused barangay tanod. It was eventually cornered near a sari-sari store and coaxed back inside with protein bars.
Customer Experience
Customers describe the experience as “terrifying but motivating.” A beginner said, “I didn’t think I could run 8 km, but when the treadmill started heading for the exit, I discovered new strengths.” The gym plans to release more “sentient fitness machines,” including: a weight bench that insults you until you lift properly, a yoga mat that rolls itself up if your form is bad, and a stationary bike that refuses to cooperate unless you commit to your goals. Membership has tripled.
