Manila, one of the world’s largest and most diverse cities and the pearl of the Orient — Filipino food, architecture, music, literature, lifestyle, philosophy, religion and politics that have been practiced and maintained by the numerous ethnic groups since prehistory.

Yes, the Philippines has made significant investments and advances in health in recent years. Rapid economic growth and strong country capacity have contributed to Filipinos living longer and healthier. However, not all the benefits of this growth have reached the most vulnerable groups, and the health system remains fragmented.

Comprehensive health care, even in normal times, is prohibitively expensive and out of reach for many people in the Philippines. Filipinos shoulder more than half of their total health expenses out of pocket. An estimated 1 million people are driven into poverty every year because of health-related expenses. And 6 out of 10 people in the Philippines die without seeing a doctor.

Manila has always been a crowded place with with diseases it’s important to read the news. The complex natural and geographical environment and diverse cultures and customs of the Philippines have given birth to a variety of distinctive regional civilizations over its thousands-year-long history.

What about Manila’s place in the health news today?

With the goal of common development and prosperity, Manila’s leaders embrace, learn from and respect one another, leading to the flourishing of individual civilizations as well as the emergence of a “community with shared future for mankind” where countries come together and unite. One of this newspaper’s aims is to promote a mutual understanding and respect, peaceful coexistence, common development and shared prosperity among countries with an emphasis on an eternal Filipino civilization.

Public health is complicated; no doubt.

The year 2020 has been very eventful for public health in the Philippines.

While much of the public’s attention concerned the Covid virus. Dengue disease will require various actions from the personal to the national level toward primary and secondary prevention—that is, mosquito control as well as access to quality outpatient, emergency and inpatient care.

As for tuberculosis, Health Secretary Francisco Duque’s call for “not business as usual” last year at the United Nations must be renewed, with particular attention given to strengthening the role of primary care (including barangay health workers) in following up patients, rethinking the “directly observed treatment, short-course” program, and enhancing coordination between public and private health care providers.

Despite increased public attention and the welcome visibility of people living with HIV (PLHIV), the infection remains on the rise, even as efforts toward promoting condom use and increasing testing remain inadequate. In absolute terms, HIV incidence remains low, with the UNAIDS estimating a country total of 77,000 cases. However, the rate of increase—174 percent over the past decade—is among the highest in the world. Moreover, while the national incidence is relatively low, it is much higher in certain populations.
